The Selection Process for the Leading Lawyer Program
Being selected as a Leading Lawyers in Illinois is not easy, as the process is stringent. Only 5% of all licensed lawyers practicing law in each state can be chosen as Leading Lawyers. Other award programs allow lawyers to pay to be considered for the award. Leading Lawyers does not allow lawyers to pay to participate. Instead, the appointment of lawyers is based exclusively on peer reviews.
Leading Lawyers sends a survey to lawyers in a geographical location who practice in the same area. The lawyers in that area will nominate a lawyer they think should receive the award. After gathering a list of the most frequently nominated lawyers, Leading Lawyers will begin gathering information to decide which lawyers are the most highly regarded in their practice area and geographic location. They will also review the potential selectee’s ethical standings to ensure they have not been involved in legal or ethical violations. During the final stage, the Leading Lawyers Advisory Board reviews the selectees.
