A family of four resides in a large ranch house with a pool on an expansive five acres in Barrington. The Father, Alex, owns a successful electrical contracting business. He has been a devoted father through the years, attending all of his son’s little league games and his daughter’s dance recitals.

Alex has also been a good and loving husband, taking his wife, Erica, on trips around the world and showering her with gifts whenever he could. He supported her through night classes as she pursued her master’s degree in business and marketing.

After all the years of building a successful business and supporting his family, Alex is now trying to focus more on himself. He is spending more time at the country club, golfing three days a week and playing cards two days a week. As a result, he is back at the office many nights to catch up on his work. Alex and Erica have been slowly growing apart over the past few years. Last week, one of his wife’s friends informed Alex that Erica might be having an affair. Alex confirmed it by snooping at texts on her phone. Alex is now wondering if they are headed for divorce. He is spending even more time away from home.

Erica is a caring mother, always supporting her children while simultaneously rising through the ranks at her company to eventually become the Marketing President. She travels a lot for work, and has developed a relationship with a coworker from another city over the past year. She wasn’t planning to meet someone, it just happened. Like her husband, Erica also sensed that they had been growing apart for some time. She bought her new work friend a Rolex watch and took him on a cruise to the Caribbean. Erica is rarely at home because her job is so demanding, and Alex is never there, anyway. When she gets time to blow off steam, she likes to meet up for drinks with girlfriends.

Their son, Mitchell, was a star little league player, which helped him make the varsity soccer team his sophomore year of high school. He has always been a straight “A” student thanks to his parent’s direction. However, in the last year his parents have little focus on him and his sister, which has allowed him freedom he never had. He is now 17 and throws parties at his parents’ house since they are never home. He has become very popular with the wrong crowd, who know that Mitch’s parties always have lots of drugs and alcohol.

At one such party, Mitchell meets a new girl and decides to impress her by taking her out in his father’s new sports car. While driving over 100 mph down a country road, he quickly discovers that being a star athlete does not qualify him to be a race car driver. He loses control at a bend in the road, hitting another car and sending it into a ditch, killing the occupant. Somehow, Mitchell and his friend survive the accident with only minor injuries. He knows he is in deep trouble; only one month earlier one of his friends was pulled over on his way home from one of Mitchell’s parties and blew a .12 BAC.

Their daughter, Carla, was also a straight “A” student who is also heavily involved in Student Government and other extracurriculars. She was a popular student in grade school and is still popular as a high school freshman. She is now 15. Unfortunately, she has gotten caught up in the parties her brother has been hosting and is developing an addiction to Heroin and Oxy.
